What is in the test?
The test goes from easy to hard. When a part is still too hard (fewer than about 2 in 3 correct), the test stops there, so beginners finish in a few minutes.
| Part | Questions | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Hiragana | 6 | Reading Hiragana characters and short words (あ, い, す, ね…), including look-alikes such as ぬ – め and さ – ち. |
| 2. Katakana | 6 | Reading Katakana characters and loanwords (ア, シ, ツ, テニス…). |
| 3. N5 | 10 | Reading kanji words and basic grammar (は, を, に, 〜ます, 〜たい…): one question for every 2 N5 lessons. |
| 4. N4 | 10 | N4 kanji words and grammar (plain forms, 〜たら, 〜ば, polite speech…): one question for every 2 N4 lessons. |
On this English page there are no vocabulary-meaning questions, because the app teaches word meanings in Vietnamese. Already sure about Hiragana and Katakana? Choose “start from N5”.
How to read your result
The JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) has 5 levels, from N5 (easiest) to N1 (hardest). This test helps you choose where to start; it does not replace the official JLPT.
| Estimated level | Where to start |
|---|---|
| Beginner | Hiragana – the first stage of the app. You can also look at our free Hiragana chart. |
| You can read Hiragana | Katakana |
| You know the alphabet · Studying N5 | N5, from the lesson where your mistakes begin |
| N5 completed · Studying N4 | N4, from lesson 1 or from the lesson where your mistakes begin |
| Solid N4 | Review N4 with the JLPT-style mock tests in the app. N3 is coming soon. |
You also get a score for each skill (kana, kanji reading, grammar) and a list of the questions you missed.
Wakuma takes you on a trip around Japan: Hiragana, Katakana, then N5 and N4 (20 lessons each) with vocabulary, kanji with Sino-Vietnamese readings, grammar, dialogues and JLPT-style mock tests. The app is in Vietnamese. KSC online members use the same account as Thị trấn Wakuma. See details and try it free for 3 days.
Frequently asked questions
Is the test free? Do I need to sign up?
It is completely free. No sign-up and no phone number needed. You can take it as many times as you like.
How long does it take?
At most 32 questions, about 10 minutes. If a part is still too hard, the test stops early and shows your result right away.
Is the result the same as a JLPT score?
No. This is a short test to find where to start learning. The official JLPT is much longer and also has a listening section.
Can children take it?
Yes. The Japanese with Wakuma app is for students from grade 4 and adults. Younger children can do the Hiragana part with a parent.
Is there an N3 test?
For now the test goes up to N4. N3 will be added when the app has N3 lessons.
